Sneak peak of the chair I designed for Granny's Finest. The vintage Thonet chair is refurbished with soft knitted parts made by one of the grannies from Utrecht, Emmy. The chair is made for the mayor of Utrecht and will sit next to other chairs from different neighbourhoods of the city in his office. I worked with designer Jörgen Smit in his workspace at 'Loods Ateliers'; a creative hub with designers that make their own work and help others with producing fine work like this beauty. I'm very happy with the collaboration. This is how we did it.
We started with a vintage chair, the cain webbing was falling apart and had to be removed
I asked Emmy to knit two pieces in a herringbone pattern in a sand colour and we contacted a company that is specialised in cain webbing and other materials.
Jörgen made a frame for the knitted parts by attaching wooden parts, fabric and a cushion for the seating.
The last and most nerve-racking part was putting everything together, I assisted Jörgen because this was a four handed operation. Here's a sneak peak of the result, what do you think?
